Zion Narrows Overnight: A 2-Day Top-Down Itinerary

Red sandstone buttes rising from open high-desert terrain

The Zion Narrows top-down route follows the Virgin River through a slot canyon from Chamberlain's Ranch to the Temple of Sinawava, about 16 miles, most of it wading or walking directly in the riverbed itself. Strong hikers do it as a long single day, but splitting it overnight at one of the 12 designated campsites turns it into an unforgettable slow trip through one of the most striking landscapes in the National Park System.

This is a river hike, not a trail hike, your feet are wet the entire way, and the biggest risk isn't fatigue, it's weather upstream you can't see from inside the canyon.

Day 1: Chamberlain's Ranch to a canyon campsite

From the Chamberlain's Ranch trailhead, the trail follows a dirt road and open canyon before dropping into the river itself, with the true narrows beginning several miles in. Highlights on this stretch include a waterfall you climb around early on and increasingly tall canyon walls as you descend, budget more time than the mileage suggests since a large share of the day is spent wading, not walking on dry trail.

The 12 designated backcountry campsites are spread through the middle section of the canyon; book a specific site with your permit and plan your day's pace to reach it, campsites here are first-come within your reservation, not first-come overall.

Day 2: Campsite to Temple of Sinawava

The second day enters the true Narrows, where canyon walls close to as little as 20 to 30 feet apart and rise hundreds of feet overhead, including the famous Wall Street section near the bottom. This stretch is shorter in mileage than day one but slower in pace, most of the iconic photography happens here, and it's worth the time.

The route ends at the Temple of Sinawava, connecting to the paved Riverside Walk and the park shuttle system, no permit is needed for this final bottom section, which is also popular with day hikers coming up from the bottom.

Permits and seasonal access

  • A wilderness permit is required for the top-down overnight route, available through an advance lottery and a smaller last-minute walk-in allotment
  • The route closes entirely when flash flood risk is high or the river's flow rate exceeds a safe threshold; check the park's current conditions the morning you start, not just the week before
  • Water shoes or river-specific footwear with good grip on wet rock matter more here than typical hiking boots; many hikers rent a full canyoneering setup (shoes, neoprene socks, a walking stick) locally
  • A dry bag or dry-bag-lined pack is essential, your gear will get splashed and occasionally submerged crossing deeper sections

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a permit for the Zion Narrows overnight hike?

Yes, a wilderness permit is required for the top-down route from Chamberlain's Ranch, available through an advance online lottery with a smaller last-minute walk-in allotment for unclaimed dates.

How dangerous is flash flooding in the Zion Narrows?

Serious. The canyon is prone to flash floods from storms that may be miles upstream and invisible from inside the canyon, the park closes the route when flow rates or flood risk exceed safe thresholds, and hikers should check current conditions the morning they start.

What should you wear to hike the Zion Narrows?

Water shoes or canyoneering-specific footwear with good wet-rock grip, not standard hiking boots. Many hikers rent a full setup locally, including neoprene socks and a walking stick, especially in cooler months.

How many days does the Zion Narrows top-down hike take?

Strong hikers complete the roughly 16-mile route in a single long day, but splitting it overnight at one of the 12 designated backcountry campsites is a far less rushed way to experience the canyon.
